Is Coaching Right for You? Understanding the Difference Between Therapy and Life-Recovery Coaching

Many people I talk to aren't quite sure what Life coaching is and how it's different from traditional talk therapy. And especially how Life-Recovery coaching specifically is different from other coaching modalities such as career coaching or mindset coaching. In this article, I explain some of the general differences and similarities as well as how my Life-Recovery coaching is unique.

First, let's look at traditional talk therapy which many people are familiar with.

It's often the first thing people suggest when someone is struggling. And for good reason — therapy is a powerful, evidence-based path to healing. But therapy and coaching are not the same thing. They serve different purposes, different people, and different moments in the journey.

Understanding the difference could help you find exactly the support you've been looking for.

Therapy is designed for mental illness. Coaching is designed for mental wellness.

Therapy is a licensed, clinical practice. It diagnoses and treats mental health conditions — depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and more. If you are in crisis, managing a diagnosed condition, or working through acute trauma, therapy is the right and necessary starting point. Full stop.

Coaching, by contrast, is for people who are mentally well — but who know that something is still getting in their way. People who are functioning, capable, and often high-achieving on the outside, but who keep running into the same patterns, the same relationship dynamics, the same quiet sense that they're not living as fully or as freely as they could be.

Coaching doesn't diagnose or treat. It illuminates, guides, and equips.

My coaching specializes in something specific: the impact of dysfunctional family systems on adults and how that impacts their adult relationships and daily lives.

This work is rooted in the principles of Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families — ACA — a recovery framework that recognizes how growing up in environments marked by alcoholism, mental illness, emotional neglect, chronic conflict, or any form of family dysfunction shapes the way we relate to ourselves and others as adults.

You don't have to have grown up with alcoholism to recognize yourself in this work. If your childhood home was unpredictable, emotionally unsafe, or simply not equipped to meet your needs, you likely developed survival patterns that are still running today — people-pleasing, chronic self-doubt, fear of abandonment, difficulty setting boundaries, losing yourself in relationships.

These aren't character flaws. They're adaptations. And they can be unlearned.

Life-recovery coaching is the structured, supported process of doing exactly that.

My approach integrates a range of evidence-informed modalities, including:

· Root-cause coaching to uncover the limiting beliefs and patterns driving your behavior

· Hypnotherapy to access and release unconscious conditioning that talk alone can't reach

· NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and Timeline Therapy to rewire the stories you've been telling about yourself

· Yoga philosophy and practice to cultivate presence, self-awareness, and inner strength

· Somatic practices as tools to help regulate the nervous system and support the deeper work

· ACA step-work and recovery principles as the foundational framework

All of this is organized through two signature frameworks: the Six Pillars of SELF-Recovery™, a chakra-aligned roadmap through every dimension of healing, and the PIVOT Process™, a practical five-step tool for interrupting old patterns in real time.

Therapy and coaching can — and often do — work beautifully together. Many of my clients see a therapist and work with me simultaneously. Therapy does the deep clinical healing. Coaching builds the conscious, empowered life on top of that foundation.

But if you're already mentally well, and what you're looking for is a guide to help you break the patterns that are keeping you stuck — coaching may be exactly what's next.
